Multiplexing SMTP

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol traffic can be split across multiple machines by assigning multiple IP addresses to the primary Mail Exchanger for a domain. To illustrate the way this will work an understanding of the semantics of Mail Exchanger DNS records is required. Alternatively, incoming messages can be multiplexed using layer 4 switch technology, such as that provided by the Linux Virtual Server Project[Zha].
